Background
Aidric is a writer, a knight and a (mostly) reformed ne'er-do-well. Despiite siding with the losing side of the Succession War, Aidric now serves the Rose Queen and Rivana as their progagandist-in-chief and sometimes warrior. He is a man of considerable pride, good bloodlines and a driving need to make his mark on history.
1840-09-20: Aidric Carling is born at Holymount, the second son of Viscount Willard Carling and his countess Carlene Carling of House Tracano. As the second son his parents raise him with an eye to being ‘the spare’ if something should happen to his elder brother Kennon.
1843: Aidric’s yonger sister Hellena Carling is born.
1843-1847: Aidric proves to have a good mind for his lessons, but caught between an elder brother and a younger sister he causes trouble to gain attention quickly burning through his parent’s tolerance.
1846-03-12: Countess Carling gives birth to a third son named Rikard. He is born sickly however and dies several days later. Aidric’s parents had considered sending Aidric to the church if the child was a boy, but with his death Aidric continues as the spare.
1847-09-30: Carlene Carling uses her family connections to secure Aidric a place in court as a page to King Lucas. Aidric is bundled off with plenty of coin, fine clothes and some guards for a journey overland to Sunsreach (faegates not being well-trusted in Normont).
1847-10-10: Aidric arrives at court and takes up his duties as a page of King Lucas’ household. There is a bit of a learning curve as he has to adapt to his menial duties, dealing with boys his own rank and (gasp!) ones who out rank him and the overall grandeur of the court.
1847-1851: Aidric adapts to court life well. He does well at his studies, does less well at his training at arms but thoroughly enjoys the ‘southern’ freedoms of Sunsreach and is mesmerized by the great and powerful people who stride about the place. Among the children his own age he tends to be a bully, using his name and rank as a shield to torment those children without those protections. He often pays for these slights in the training yard which only makes him work out new torments for his rivals. His antics go largely unnoticed by the adults at court due to the Thirty Years War. During this time he meets his uncle Anton Tracano the Lord Marshall of Rivana as well as his own distant cousin Tristan Tracano.
1851-02-04: Aidric is among the members of King Lucas’ household who attend the Second Conclave with him. While there Aidric takes copious notes in his journal (his first ‘history’) and sees how men can shape history with enough power and influence as demonstrated by how King Maris and King Lucas bring an end to the war that has raged for all of Aidric’s life with a couple strokes of a pen. The event ignites Aidric’s desire to become one of the men that shape history.
1851-03-05: At the celebration for the war’s end Aidric is cornered by his uncle Anton and asked to become his eyes and ears in King’s Lucas’ household. Just returned from watching Lucas end the war Aidric is hesitant but as the glow from that event dims he begins to change his mind.
1851-03-16: After attending King Lucas for several hours while the king just drank and stared grimly out the window, Aidric accepts Anton’s offer, reasoning whatever power Lucas had is expiring and he is becoming a done and bitter old man.
1851-1853: Aidric spies for his uncle and is given extra coin in return. He also begins to associate with the children of the men in Anton’s circle such as his own first cousins Dixon and Victorin Tracano, the sons of Anton’s younger brother Davin. He also clashes with some of the Rose supporters such as Thaddeus Greycen. While this makes him a rather obvious spy, the king is less than attentive as his last two children die during these years increasing the depth of his depression.
1853-07-03: King Lucas Tracano dies. Aidric is woken along with the rest of the royal household by the discovery and he quickly reports the news to his uncle.
1853-07-07: Aidric takes part in the funeral of King Lucas. He is aware of the tensions around the Succession, but being only twelve at the time is not sure how he should proceed except to wait for further instructions from his uncle.
1853-07-10: Anton makes an attempt to kill his rival for the throne Prince Arturo and kidnap Arturo’s daughter Alysande. Both attacks fail due to the royal lancers guarding both Arturo and his daughter. After the attack Anton flees and Raymund Durante closes off Sunsreach to both sides. Unaware of his uncle’s plans Aidric is left in Sunsreach after it is closed off, protected but watched like the other noble children kept there.
1853-07-25: Word reaches Sunsreach that House Gerrell, the Dukes of Normont have declared their own neutrality. Representatives from the Gerrell visit the city and arrange to see the children of their lords returned home, including Aidric.
1853-07-30: Aidric is sent home with the delegation from Normont.
1853-08-09: Aidric arrives at Holymont and is reunited with his family. Their welcome is warm despite some reports of his troublemaking at court. However after a week of being the center of attention he is shunted back into his place as the middle child struggling for notice and returns to his old cycle of acting out to get attention.
1853-10-12: Aidric, now thirteen is sent to squire for Paul Gerrell in Falconhome. There he meets his uncle Ranulf Gerrell, his aunt the Duchess Alyanna Gerrell and their children. He finds most of the Gerrells a little provincial compared to his companions at court, while his cousins in turn mock him for his lack of skill with Kherzari, the tongue of the tribes that established Normont and his lack of fighting skills. However his knight, Sir Paul is kinder, and despite being a supporter of Anton’s rival Arturo, treats his squire well and patiently endures Aidric’s misbehaviour.
1853-1854: Aidric eventually befriends his cousin Symon who is curious about Aidric’s time in the south and who teaches Aidric a better grasp of Kherzari (a fact he and Aidric keep from Aidric’s other cousins for their amusement) at the same time Paul trains Aidric at arms and also begins to instil into him an appreciation for the honour and tradition of knighthood.
1854: Tristan Tracano is sent to Falconhome under the protection of his maternal uncle Paul Gerrell. Aidric is glad to see another ‘civilized face’ at Falconhome and Tristan, Symon and he become friends despite Tristan’s family’s loyalties to Arturo over Anton.
1854-1856: Aidric carries on his training in Normont, visiting his family occasionally but spending most of his time in Falconhome. He does however closely follow the war through questioning every merchant, messenger and traveler who passes through for any news of the war all of which he writes down in his journal. Finding that Anton seems to be winning, he feels all the more trapped by being stuck in Falconhome.
1856-11-02: Aidric joins Paul in turning back some of Anton’s (now known as the Thorn to Arturo’s Rose) raiders on the borders of Normont. Aidric kills one of the men saving Paul’s life, but while the men with them celebrate Aidric’s blooding, he is secretly disgusted by having killed a man fighting for his uncle. Paul recognizes this and tries to talk to Aidric but is rebuffed. Aidric does however talk to some of the prisoners taken in the fight and from them he learns his uncle is said to be besieging Brightfield a just across the border in the Tracano lands.
1856-11-08-15: Aidric leaves Falconhold on the excuse of visiting his family in Holymont, instead he rides further south and crosses the border and heads to Brightfield.
1856-11-15: Aidric finds the camp and is initially taken prisoner until he is recognized by the commander of the siege Alphard Haldis. Alphard tells him his uncle has gone back east but holds Aidric at the siege camp to prevent him from being captured by Rose raiders.
1856-12-15: Aidric takes part in defending the siege camp from an attack by the Roses. The relief force is defeated and scattered and the defenders of Brightfield surrender. Despite promising to let the garrison go free, Alphard orders them slaughtered. Aidric takes no part in the slaughter and already writing of his experiences in his journal he records this event as well.
1856-12-30: Aidric travels with some of Alphard’s army to Charger’s Rest and is presented to ‘King’ Anton. He is warmly greeted and readily swears his fealty to Anton and recognizes him as the rightful king of Rivana. In return Anton has him squired by one of his own Lancers Guillame Marwyn. During his welcome he tries to speak to Anton but his uncle puts him off, however he does meet with his uncle Davin and cousins Dixon and Victorin who welcome him like the long-lost kin he is. Though when Aidric mentions Brightfield to Davin, he becomes quiet and simply says of Anton, “he knows”.
Early 1857: Aidric remains close to Anton in the early months of the year, moving from castle to castle with his court and Sir Guilliame. He spends his time watching his uncle, training hard for war and writing in his journals about the doings of Anton’s court.
1857, Mai – 1858, Marse: Aidric spends the time travelling with Sir Gulliame from siege to siege in search of Prince Arturo. They never find him but are ambushed several times while besieging castles he is said to be hiding in or chasing men said to be protecting him.
1858-03-14: Reunited with Davin and his cousin during the siege of Brewer’s Keep, the siege camp is ambushed by Roses and Aidric’s cousin Dixon is killed. Grieved by his son’s death Davin orders the captives from the raid executed and Aidric gladly takes part.
1858, Marse – 1860 Mai: With Dixon’s death the war which to this point had been an adventure to put his uncle Anton on the throne, becomes much darker for Aidric and less about his uncle and more about revenge for his dead friends and ‘plucking Roses’. Even Davin, who had become a surrogate father and moral compass takes a darker turn keeping becoming less merciful and chivalrous when it comes to his enemies. To his own consternation Aidric begins to understand some of his mentor Sir Gulliame’s bitterness and the brutality employed by Lord Alphard. Though Aidric’s involvement in the fighting is limited and much of his time is spent close to Anton’s court.
1860-05-23: Anton’s forces finally corner Arturo Tracano and bring him to battle in what would be called the Battle of the Rose and Thorn. Anton kills Arturo in the battle and Aidric does well himself though his mentor Sir Guillame is killed by one of Arturo’s Lancers, Mattias Cassomir. Having never liked Gullame much he does not mourn the man, but he does see his body and weapons are sent home to Stonewall. Following the victory, Arturo’s body is desecrated and paraded about the bloody field, which disgusts both Aidric and Davin, however when Anton offers Aidric his knighthood he cannot find it in him to refuse taking the honour with a blade still stained with Arturo’s blood.
1860-07-20: Aidric learns of the murder of Bryar Haldis on the orders of or by the hand of Bryar’s son Darren Haldis. In the wake of the murder and Darren’s disappearance Alphard is made the new Duke of Eastfield.
1860-07-23: Aidric hears of the battle of Giorgio’s redoubt and despite the dishonour of sending assassins after a young women not trained in arms he is secretly disappointed that it failed hoping that it would have ended the war.
1860-08-12: Aidric gets a letter from Symon Gerrell telling him of Tristan’s defection to the Rose camp earlier in the year and the assassination of Tristan’s father. This piled upon the desecration of Arturo’s body and the attempt on Alysande’s life and the elevation of Alphard Haldis proves too much for Aidric’s conscience to bear and he confronts his uncle alone and after delivering an angry tirade he is met with a chilled silence before being dismissed. Aidric rides to join his uncle Davin.
1860-09-05: Aidric, Davin and Victorin join Anton’s forces as they try to bring the remaining supporters of Alysande to battle. They are successful but the covert return of Darren Haldis who provided evidence of Anton and Alphard’s hand in the murder of his father turns the men of Eastfield on the rest of Anton’s forces turning it into a rout. Aidric is divided from his uncle and cousin in the fighting and when he finds them again they are surrounded by former allies fighting an impossible battle for their lives. Aidric ultimately chooses to flee rather than join his closest friends in their darkest hour.
1860-09-06: Aidric is captured by a Haldis patrol and taken prisoner.
1860, Septembre – 1862, Marse: After his capture Aidric is shown the proof that turned the men of Eastfield and asked to renounce his fealty to his uncle and swear to the Rose Queen. He accepts the evidence but is unable to make himself swear to Alysande while Anton still lives. He is kept prisoner a while longer as a result before finally striking a deal to swear not to escape and to never take up arms against the Queen in exchange for a captivity more suited to his station. That was a deal he could accept not willing to fight for Anton any longer. He was sent south to the Haldis of fortress of Whitewalls where he was put in the care of Randall Haldis, the surviving uncle of Duke Darren. Aidric had lost his journals at the Battle of the Ascendant Rose and attempted to re-write his recollections only to find the memories too raw which more often led to burnt or crumpled parchment and night spent drinking those memories into oblivion. However he did surface from his drunken haze to do things, first, to pen an old favourite tale, Giorgio and the Dragon, which started as something to do but became a means of pouring his feelings about the war into something less literally than a simple war journal. In the tale Giorgio embodied the noble principles that Aidric had tried to live up to and battled the same fears and doubts all fighting men did before going into battle, while the dragon embodied the hatred Aidric had felt for the enemy by war’s end and the darker qualities of his uncle Anton, Alphard Haldis and even Guilliame Marwyn. The second thing was taking Roslyn Bayde to his bed. Roslyn was a common born girl but the daughter of a hedge knight in the Whitewalls garrison. Aidric found her light-heartedness appealing but didn’t love her, though they became lovers and she became pregnant with his child.
1862-03-17: Roslyn gives birth to a daughter which they name Casella. Aidric formally recognizes the child as his much to the dismay of his family.
Mid 1862: Aidric shares his Girogio and the Dragon tale with certain scholars and it gains some limited notoriety.
1863-04-12: Aidric attends the coronation of Queen Alysande and with Anton being executed the month before swears his fealty to her and presents a hand penned copy of the story of Giorgio and the Dragon. He also learns what happened to his journals after the Battle of the Ascendant Rose which fell into the hands of the Rose supporters. He is asked to swear to their veracity so they can be used as evidence against former Thorns. Aidric agrees and in a fit of selflessness asks any reward be bestowed on the surviving children of Davin Tracano rather than himself.
1863, Avril – 1864, Juin: Pardoned though he is Aidric is not particularly welcome at Sunsreach or at home in Normont accompanied by his former lover and his child he takes pilgrimage to Sanctum. They remain there a few months before moving on to Pacitta where he finds his Giorgio and the Dragon tale has proceeded him and he is welcomed by the local artists as one of their own. Using the coin still afforded him by his family he rents a modest home for Roslyn and their daughter but otherwise ignores them in favour of spending his time with fellow artists, drinking and spending time in the arms of various lovers.
1864, Juin: Aidric runs afoul of some of the former Thorns in Pacitta. He survives the attack but it convinces him to seek protection. He is offered jobs by other former Thorns who have sold their swords to mercenary companies but he declines choosing instead to sell his pen to the various politicians in Pacitta both for coin and their protection. He becomes a propagandist for hire writing speeches and plays for those with the coin to pay.
1865, Juin – After a year of dabbling at the edges Pacittan politics Aidric finds his desire to be a shaper of history re-kindled and writes to several contacts in Rivana to try and find a place to be of service and plans to meet with some of them at the Council Tournament held in Pacitta. However before he makes good on those plans the city is attacked by Brodlund Raiders and Aidric is wounded in the fighting. When he wakes he finds out that Roslyn was killed in the fighting but Cassella lives. He relies on friends to care for his child while he recovers.
1865, Septembre – Octobre: Aidric newly recovered from his wound is summoned back to Rivana by the Queen and he takes his daughter with him. She tasks him with seeking out Thorn spies in the ranks of her people. He agrees but on the terms the Queen helps find him a noble household to take care of his daughter while he does so. His terms are met and Casella is put in the home of Dannel Cassomir a famous Lancer and a cousin to the Queen by marriage. As part of his duties Aidric is assigned to work with two figures from his past Tristan Tracano and Thaddeus Greycen. Officially Thaddeus’ aide, Aidric travels with him first to the Rovilon tourney and then to Pacitta where Thaddeus is wed to the princess Ariane l’Valdan.
1865, Novembre – Aidric returns from Pacitta with a captured former Thorn and is able to gain intelligence about the number of mercenaries currently working for the Thorns. He continues his spy-hunting in Sunsreach and in doing so becomes involved with a courtesan, Saffran, who is connected to the merchant (and secretly Syndicate) house Moreno. Late in the Thorn rebels seize the town of Goldhollow and Aidric is given command of some of troops from Normont to help recover the town.
1865, Decembre – Aidric takes part in re-taking Goldhollow from the Thorns and afterwards travels east with Sir Thaddeus and receives command of yet more troops to help put down the revolt in Eastfield. Their initial foray leads to Midthorp which Aidric helps capture by leading men through the same secret passage he escaped through some years before. However despite this success rivalries, the realities of a war in winter and clever propaganda by Alphard Haldis slows the advance.
1866-01-20: Aidric is reunited with his former mentor Paul Gerrell when the forces in the gather after learning that Alphard Haldis is hiding in the lands near castle Blackstone in Normont. They are civil but it’s clear Aidric’s earlier betrayal does not sit well with either of them.
1866-12-30: The Battle of Blackstone – The Loyalists including Jaren Cassomir, Thaddeus Greycen, Darren Haldis and Paul Gerrell battle the core of Alphard Haldis rebels beneath the walls of the Farrant stronghold of Blackstone. Aidric takes part in the battle but his greatest successes comes afterwards when he seizes letters from the now dead Alphard’s tent. Some of which he surrenders over to the other some of which he keeps. The battle also highlights a difference between Aidric’s new allies and his former ones as Alphard Haldis’ body is not mutilated after his death. Instead it is burnt to ensure he is dead.
1866-02-03: Raymund Durante delivers word of Sunsreach’s fall and Jaren Cassomir rallies the loyalist troops at Blackstone for the march to free the Queen. Aidric is among the first to pledge himself and his troops to their future king. He also writes down Jaren’s words before marching out with his forces.
1866, Fevrier: Aidric takes part in the battle of Sunsreach where he and the Normont loyalists undertake the first charge through the gates opened by the Huntresses. Paul is wounded and Aidric takes command, securing the city and the path to the palace. Afterwards he is on hand when Paul succumbs to his wounds and when the palace is secure presents Paul’s sword, still bloody from the battle, to the Queen as the formal submission of Normont to the Queen. Following the battle Aidric is left in charge of the Normont troops and sees to their billeting and joins the House Guard in tracking down any traitors who might be hiding in the city. He also takes the time to decode the messages he took from Alphard’s tent many of which incriminate wealthy individuals who were hedging their bets by promising not to oppose Alphard if he won. There are also letters Aidric believes to be from the Chancellor of Pacitta to Alphard speaking of people in the Chancellor’s care.
1866, Marse - Mai: Aidric is tapped to help the Queen writing decrees and other tasks within his skillset and also sees Jaren’s speech at Blackstone is copied and widely distributed to help rally the people. He is also involved with the negotiations with Couviere when their Queen arrives to ask for Rivanan help to turn back the Tirians. Privately Aidric reunites with Saffran who he has come to learn is a member of the Syndicate, he sells most of his captured letters to her family in exchange for coin and to establish a formal relationship with their family as an Associate. Aidric keeps the letters about the Chancellor, but he lacks the opportunity to investigate them as he is sent with the delegation to Pacitta to plead that the Faith’s armies be sent to help Couviere. Their embassy is successful, but as Aidric’s ally (and friend) Sir Thaddeus is leading the Rivanan contingent he finds he cannot return home and instead joins the holy knights riding north so he can fight beside his friend. He arrives in time for the battle and survives. While he does nothing particularly glorious in the battle, his choice to stand by his friend gives him some satisfaction. Following the battle he recovers from his wounds and begins writing again with considerable experiences to share.
On the Grid
"I'm a writer… I give the truth, scope!" - A Knight's Tale
A tall almost lanky man of lean but pleasingly symmetrical features which would be more pleasant if not for the cynical glint to his eyes and the cruel humor behind his rare smiles. He wears his dark brown hair swept back and his eyes are a pale shade of sea green. His wealth, knighthood and high birth is evident in how he dresses from the quality of the cloth, the gold and silver embroidery, his golden spurs and the glint of the gems in his rings. Though even in peasants roughspun his proud bearing and superior airs would give him away as what he is.
A knight of some experience he has the scars to prove it. There is a narrow white scar along his neck from a spear, a ropy pink scar from a sword wound on his chest and a stilleto wound on his right shoulder blade.
Aidric does his best to present himself as a jerk through to his core feeling that peoples hatred is easier to predict (and to deal with) than their love and affection. Indeed if someone did love him he wouldnt know what to do with it. That said even while he can be unpleasant, he isnt without honour or purpose. Having betrayed oaths in the past he clings to his word with an almost obsessive degree. He is also loyal to what few friends he has, His personal goal is to be a shaper of history by (almost) any means necessary and has chosen to do that through service to Rivana, a kingdom he truly loves and wishes to see improved by his own actions, even if he hasnt figured out how yet.
In all Aidric is a clever but cynical man with a deep pride in his high birth and a belief in the current social order and the benefits of civilization as a whole (especialy its scholarly and artistic aspects) and is indeed as loyal to Rivanas current regime as he professes. However what most do not understand is he is driven to that loyalty not out of love but a personal desire to honour the oaths to his Queen and future king in spite of how little he likes them.
Aggressive: Never back down. It was a mantra drilled into him by his Thorn kinsmen and it stuck. Despite knowing this attitude doesn't always serve him it has been a hard one to shake.
Ambitious: Aidric is never satisfied with what he has. He wants always wants more and he is often willing to bend and break rules to get it.
Bad Reputation: Aidric's bad reputation is multi-faceted. He is known to be hot tempered, ambitious, lecherous and of course a former Thorn. He has done more of late to distance himself from that last part but the rest still clings to him.
Friends in Dark Places: Aidric is an Associate of the Moreno family acting as a political connection and sometimes front man for their smuggling operations. In return he is often able to lay his hands on things other people can't and find just the right item to help him win over various courtiers.
Gifted: Writer: Aidric has a talent for prose, which employs to write histories as well as the odd chivalric romance. His best known work is Prince Giorgio and the Dragon.
Perceptive: Despite seeming entirely self-absorbed Aidric is a good judge of character and has a keen eye for detail.
Proud: Trained from birth to believe his blood made him better than most. Aidric feels a certain degree of entitlement and when that is challenged he tends to react poorly and sometimes violently.
Well-Connected: Through is Carling and Tracano blood Aidric is related to a frightening number of people of note, and he is not above leveraging these blood ties to his advantage as well as that of his allies.
Aidric is a knight of high status and has recently come into some money. He has a long sword and shield, a bastard sword, a suit of brigandine armor, a brigandine jacquet, riding leathers, as well as a dirk and a small concealable dagger. He rides into battle with either the long sword and shield or bastard sword depending on the fight but not both. He has a warhorse and barding as well as a riding horse.
He often travels with his journal and can usually be counted on to have a pen and ink close at hand.
—
Warhorse: A white charger of Couviere stock named 'Snow'
Riding Horse: Of no particular stock, named 'Horse'
Bartolo's Letter: Aidric has a letter written to Alphard Haldis from Bartolo Mancini promising to keep the 'items' he held safe for the man. The original letter is in code and Adiric has it, the decryption notes as well as a sample of Bartolo's hand writing (a 'borrowed' missive sent from Bartolo to the Queen expressing his relief to hear she was safe after the Battle of Sunsreach) in a sealed scroll case at Saint Martha's Abbey along with his will. The case will states in the case of his death the letter and notes are to be given to Tristan Tracano.
Prize Money from Pacitta: Aidric has a purse of gold from the Pacittan tourney.
Prize Money from Rivana: Aidric won the writing contest at the Rivanan tourney and tripled it by betting on Thaddeus to be the highest scoring competitor in the 1866 tourney.
Prize from Tristan and Elaida's Wedding Tourney: A golden flask, two bottles of 1801 Tracano Red (an extremely rare vintage; very few bottles were made that year due to a grape blight), a set of four golden goblets each with an emerald, and a dagger with golden chasings and a lightsilver blade.
Kieran Gerrell - Aidric's squire. The son of Paul Gerrell. A youth of seventeen years.
Gyssa - The Housekeeper at the Carling manse, currently on loan to Tiadora Gerrell.
Aidric has a pair of men-at-arms at his command. One is a shorter, scarred man with a goatee named William of Holymount but whom Aidric calls "Goat" and the other is a tall, slender, blonde haired man named Godfrey Smithson but whom Aidric calls "Scarecrow". Aidric values these men more for their discretion and loyalty than their skill at arms. Despite this the two men have managed to survive a number of battles which left better men dead.

Lord Kennon Carling : Kennon picked his path and I picked mine. I do not expect those paths to cross in this lifetime. We are strangers bound by blood. |
Princess Clara Tracano : I've only met her a handful of times but she seems almost obnoxiously poised and capable for her age. So whatever the rumors say, I don't doubt she is kin to our Queen. |
Lord (Sir) Broderick Tracano : An old comrade. Now that the Queen has welcomed him to court I can associate with him without out worry appearing seditious. |
Lady Dawn Bazan : We've saved each other's lives a time or two. Though at present the scale is weighted towards me. I will be more than glad to hold onto that favor should I need it. |
Goblyn : Always so short and underfoot when I was squiring for your father. No wonder I called you Goblyn… more TBD. |
Lady Ariane Greycen : Thaddeus' wife from the royal house of l'Valdan. She and I have yet to speak at any length but it seems that Thad is happy with her. |
Lord (Sir) Graham Cassomir : A fitting scion for house Cassomir. Was unbeatable in the Rovilon melees. I suppose we now know who the man to beat is in Rivana now that Jaren is likely not to compete. |
Lady Saffran Moreno : My Syndicate contact and sometimes lover. She is good company and her contacts are extensive. |
