A survivor of the Siege of Valetta, Gabriel l'Saigner is a man currently seeking his place in the world, his faith having been shattered. He is struggling to fit in with his new house, and was the Champion of Couviere and the Circuit Champion of 1865
A survivor of the Siege of Valetta, Gabriel l'Corren is a man currently seeking his place in the world, his faith having been shattered.
To be a second son is usually measured in months or perhaps years, but Gabriel l'Corren can measure it in minutes. Seventeen minutes to be exact, the amount of time that separates his birth from that of his older brother, Michael. He has never held this against his brother, in fact, to Gabriel there is a bond between them that is thicker than the bond of blood. Though, those seventeen minutes ensured that it was Gabriel's destiny to take up the mantle of knighthood and serve House l'Corren as an officer in the vaunted Argent Legion.
Gabriel's early years are a blur to him, his memories of this time revolving around playing at being a knight with wooden swords with other boys his own age. Upon his seventh birthday, Gabriel was sent to House l'Faust to act as a Page and begin his journey into knighthood. For the next several years, he saw to his duties and began learning the skills that would become useful during battle. It was also during these years that his talent with song and lute emerged. During one winter, a troubadour arrived and the young boy was utterly fascinated by his tales of great deeds and his songs of glory in combat. As that winter progressed, the troubadour began to teach young Gabriel and to his surprise, found out that the boy had a knack for playing the instrument.
Once he was old enough, Gabriel returned home and after a brief respite, was introduce to Sir Alain, a sibling of one of his father's vassals and an officer in the Argent Legion. He was to serve as a squire to Sir Alain, a prospect that he found both daunting and exciting when it began.
Even though he had years of training by this point, the 19 year old Gabriel was not quite prepared for what was to come when the Tirian Crusade began. Traveling with the Argent Legion and joining the fighting, Sir Alain and Gabriel made a good accounting of themselves, even as they were forced to retreat, and so began the Siege of Valetta.
Despite the advantage in numbers that the tribesmen have over the defenders, the defenders hold. When assaults are made upon their defenses, the fighting is fierce. Gabriel takes several minor wounds, but Sir Alain fares far worse. During one assault, one enemy opens the knight's throat, and Gabriel is forced to watch his mentor choke in his own blood as his prayers to heal the man go unanswered.
Devastated by the loss of Sir Alain, Gabriel approached each new assault as if he had a death wish. Several times he would wade into a group of the enemy only to come out on the other side with minor wounds but covered in blood and gore. Men took to calling him 'The Red Knight' (despite the fact that he was yet a knight) because the armor he had became permanently discolored.
Since the Siege of Valetta, Gabriel has been made a full knight and has returned to his family's holdings. The events of that siege still linger with him, his faith broken, and his desire to join up with one of the Militant Orders ended. How could he serve the church without any faith? What is left to him now is to serve his House and his King to the best of his abilities.
Starting in 1865, Gabriel's standing in Couviere and the West began to rise as he became involved in various parts of the Cardinal's Gambit, even if he had no idea about any of it.
06/1865 - While in Pacitta for the tournament, which he won, the city was attacked by Brodlundian Raiders. Gabriel was one of many who came to the defense of the city-state, even getting wounded several times during the fighting. At one point in the fighting, he witnessed Alina l'Saigner in danger and went to defend her, a part of him hoping that this might show her that honor is something worthy of having (at least that was one of the justifications of his actions that he later told himself).
07/1865 - During the "Battle of the Blade" held in Venderos, when Trevor Farrant made his move, Gabriel charged forward to defend Prince Lucius instead of chasing after every other attacker as some of the other participants did. In his mind, it was his duty as a guest to defend his host. Though nothing came of it, he later found out that his actions apparantly won his brother a wife.
08/1865 - Alina visits Murnord and is ambushed along the way, Gabriel and Michael respond to some warning shots and after engaging the ambushers, ensure the safety of both her and Prince Lucius' caravan.
09/1865 - Michael gets married. And Gabriel finds out that he and Alina are betrothed. It seems that with good comes some bad? He is unsure as to how he feels about that, though his mind his preoccupied with avoiding many well-wishers after winning the Couviere Championship and Circuit Championship for 1865. Alina offers a possible escape and he takes it, though this ends up in a rather odd adventure for them both.
11/1865 - 12/1865 - Gabriel spends these months on the front defending Couviere from Tirian forces until he is called away by Alina for an emergency.
01/1866 - Gabriel and Michael are both surprised when Alina shows up with the Crown Prince. The two of them promise to keep him safe. Gabriel finds another shock in that Alina may be with child.
02/1866 - They arrive in Rovilon with Jean-Paul and Gabriel becomes involved in a fight with several of the Cardinal's Guard. He is separated from Michael and Jean-Paul, but manages to kill five members of the Guard, suffering several wounds in the process.
03/1866 - 05/1866 - As along with the rest of Couviere, Gabriel fights to defend his home from the northern invaders. When all is said and done, he is immensely relieved to see that both his father and brother survived all of the fighting.
On the Grid
Sir Gabriel l'Saigner stands 6'1" tall with closely cropped brown hair along with a clean-shaven face. On the right side of his head is a scar that goes from his temple back to his ear, a testament to a wound taken in battle. He has green eyes that look out at the world with a weary gaze.
Currently, he is wearing an outfit made of fine materials that include a doublet in the purple and black of House l'Saigner as well as black trousers and fine leather riding boots. At his hip, there is a sword belt with a sheathed sword. On the third finger of his left hand he wears his wedding ring: a silver band is set with amethyst and sapphire and onyx chips, worked in such a way around the band that they lie flush, so the ring would not interfere with Gabriel’s use of his hand at all, whether on horse or using his weapons. It is a ring very much intended for the wearer to wear often.

- A trio of rough scaring that appears to be a large claw mark that goes from his upper chest to his abdomen in a diagonal pattern. (Critical wound, taken 1866)
Gabriel l'Corren is a stoic man who has a strong sense of duty and honor. He might not have much love left for anything 'holy', but the lessons he was brought up with have had a strong impact on his life. He is also incredibly stubborn and will hold on long after he should have given up.
Quirks
- Agnostic - Gabriel has lost his belief in the One and its Church. Though it was lost before recent events, the Cardinal's actions did not help.
- Code of Honor - Having grown up a l'Corren, Gabriel conducts himself with the same honor that many l'Corren and their vassals hold to.
- Duty Bound - If Gabriel is given a duty, or if he swears to do something, better believe that he will do it, even if he has to slog his way across half the world to do it.
- Renowned - As the Circuit Champion of 1865 and the Couviere Champion of 1865, Gabriel is well-known for his prowess in tournaments. Other Couvieri will know of his skill at arms in combat, especially those that fought against the barbarians.
- Talented (One-Hand Blades) - Gabriel is a skilled swordsman, he even clashed blade to blade with the Rivanan champion, Jaren Cassomir, during one tournament, the duel a close-fought thing until they were rudely interrupted by outside interference. Though that should have been expected in the middle of a melee.
- Veteran Fighter - Having fought in a number of battles and campaigns, Gabriel's seen some shit.
- Well Equipped — Go look at the possessions tab. No seriously. Go do it. The man is a walking armory.

- Traveller, a l'Corren-trained warhorse - His most trusted steed, it was a gift from his father when he was given his spurs.
- Goblyn, a l'Valdan-trained warhorse - His standard riding horse, the name was a joke. Imagine the joke after he found out some legends might have more truth to them than one might expect.
- Strife, an Alhazri warhorse - A rare and expensive horse, he won it by winning a tournament in Pacitta in 1865. Currently he has gifted it to his wife, Alina l'Saigner.

- Juin 1866 - Gabriel participates in the Coronation tournament. He has a somewhat respectable showing but not quite what people were expecting from the reigning champion. Stress and worry over the hard birth of his supposed twin children occupy much of his attention.
- Aout 1866 - Gabriel marries Alina l'Saigner and joins her house. He is a little dismayed about what his father has gotten him into when she reveals much of her house's secrets to him.
- Septembre 1866 - He takes part in the Pacitta tournament, winning the Free for All and the Bareknuckle competition.
