With the masque held a few days prior, many of the visitors that had descended upon Lonnaire to attend had been taking their leave to return home. Though one of the southern visitors had sent request to have a few moments of Lucas’ time. Maybe surprising with most seeking the Duke or his heir’s time, save the request had come from one Emilia Cassomir. The request had offered little on why she was seeking to speak with him, just that she was.

Which was why on this particular afternoon, Emilia was to be found waiting within one of the small sitting rooms within Highwater. She stood by the window, looking out as she waited for Lucas to be informed that she had arrived. The young Cassomir worn what was likely quite expected by now, a well tailored and finely embroidered tunic that hung down over leggings. The characteristic Huntresses leathers having been left back in the rented manse for the ‘social’ visit. No need to draw more attention from the Wraiths then necessary!

—-

Lucas received the message while he was in the yard, so his arrival is delayed by taking a moment to make himself presentable. He enters the room tugging at the bottom of a comfortable woolen doublet and he smiles when he sees the figure waiting for him by the window. “Emilia,” he says as he makes his way over. “I had thought I’d missed you, good to see I was wrong,” he greets as he makes his way over to the window to stand next to her.

—-

The sound of his arrival did have Emilia turning from the window and offering one of her odd little smiles. “Lucas, I would have of waited. My of gate time is not til the 'marrow. And I am not of thinking you would have of made me wait til of then.” A mild turn of levity in her tone. “I would of inquire how you of enjoyed the of masque, but I suspect for of you they are being of a thing you must simply be of enduring. Though I do of hope you found some of enjoyment and peace within of the evening.”

She pauses slightly, a faint glance at the door as if ensuring there is not some lingering servant or Wraith. “But I wished to of speak with you about of the ruins. Or perhaps more to be letting you of know something of them. They were yet being of….occupied.”

—-

Lucas smiles, abashed. “Is it that obvious?” he says of him and the masques.”But you are right, they are not my favourite thing. They promise freedom but only to others, it is not as though my family does not know my choice of guise and note all I do.” He schools himself into a more polite tone. “Anyhow, enough of that. I do hope you enjoyed yourself though.” The words are empty platitudes. Though when the ruins are mentioned the polite mask so recently put in place is removed and the real Lucas is revealed once more.

“What?” he asks. Surprised isn’t even the word for it. “There were more monsters.” He catches himself following Emilia’s example of using the past tense. “Did you?” he asks wondering if the girl had taken it on herself to rid the ruins of the threat.

—-

The corners of her lips tug upwards in that turn of a smile,”I would of think it obvious to any who truly saw of you.” Which likely means not so many given the shallow nature of most nobility. “Of that, and I of imagine that there is some of manner of hosting of duties to be of expected.” Emilia gives a faint nod of her head,”It was of mine first, and I of admit I found it more of enjoyable then I thought I would.” Not one horribly keen on the social balls and banquets herself.

The surprise that comes at the mention of the ruins is not unexpected. “Of aye, there were of two more yet of there. I of assume the ruins were not of searched of then after you and of the others fought the first of two?” It is partial a question to confirm that assumption. Least hoping that is the case and more did not show up later. “No, I did not fight of them directly. But was of there to see them of burned. “ Patrols may have reported signs of smoke coming from the ruins the night of the masque. Or not, since they weren’t willing to actually investigate it! “I of suspect, the odd of feelings that may have kept some from lingering there of to long will no longer be of the case and the risk greater now for bandits and those of such an ilk to try and harbor there. It may be of prudent for regular of sweeps to be of made of them.” Yes, the Cassomir is actually giving a suggestion for security…and may just have a hand in bringing greater safety to the l’Saigner lands. Takes after that oldest brother apparently.

—-

Lucas concedes the point with a slight nod. “Well I am glad it proved to be more diverting than hoped,” he remarks of her own experience before turning to the other matter. “So if not you then who did the killing?” he asks with a glance to the door and his voice pitched low. “If the Archbishop sent someone I should have been told,” a pause. “Unless she wishes to replace me…” that gnawing thought is left to hang for a moment before he considers the rest. “I will pass the news on to my family, I am sure Corvin will share your view about our future security.”

—-

Emilia shakes her head a touch,”The Archbishop is of unaware of what has of transpired. And I shall have need to of report as of well to her on the matter.” That should make for an interesting report to write. “So no, she was not of sending of any of one, and I cannot of imagine she is looking to replace of you. She is of needing of everyone she has, and I of think especially those such as of you who are of outside of the Church who are not so of likely to be of distracted by of the…issues they are of having.” Her own voice if kept low for the topic at hand. “The of who…was of those who wished to of ensure the creatures had truly been of dealt with and thus took it upon of themselves to do a sweep of the ruins. I of admit, I did not think anything would have been of found. And I am of assuming nothing has of occurred to give of reason to think any of danger remained of there.” There just may be some musing done on just how Corvin might take the news. Ah, to be a fly on the wall when he was told.

—-

“Ah, good,” Lucas says of the Archbishop and that he is not to be replaced. His objections to such a move quickly fade and are replaced with curiosity instead. He keeps his voice low as a he inquires “So who defeated the creature? There were a good many of us there the first time, including your brother and a pair of his fellow Lancers, but two were enough this time. How did they manage that?” He is full of questions this Wraith. He leans against the window sill arms crossed waiting for the reply.

—-

There is a faint nod,”I am of recalling mention of there being of many the first of time, and it being a difficult of fight. “ The questions were valid ones, Emilia could not fault him for his curiosity and wanting to know how so fewer could accomplish something a greater number of skilled fighters had struggled with. “They of managed of it because to take upon such of things was what they were of born to of do. I am of afraid…little of more can I of give, as some of secrets are not of mine to speak of. Which I am afraid, is of likely to only raise of more of questions in your of mind.” Her lips twitch slightly as she considers a few moments. “There are perhaps a few of things I might be able to try and of explain, but only if I can have of your word that they go no of further than you and I. Not even to of others associated with of the Vigilants. I of warn as well, that it might not full of sate the questions you of have either.”

—-

Lucas holds up a finger, before saying anything further, and takes a moment to survey do a circuit of the room, putting an ear to the wall, then checking beyond the door before returning to the closed window. “Never hurts to be sure,” he says of his precautions. “And yes, you have my word whatever you tell me stays between us, so long as it is no threat to my family or Couviere.”

—-

Emilia’s dark eyes follow Lucas as he makes that survey of the room before speaking further, not even a flicker of question raising within her eyes. Perhaps understanding to well how ears may always linger closer than so many assume or would think. Nodding,”Of true, it never of hurts to be of sure.” There is another nod that follows,”That is of fair. I would of say, there is not of threat to of either, else we would have all long of ago been in of trouble.” There is a slight pause as she takes a small breathe,”Your question was of wrong, you asked of who, when it should have been of what did of the killing. For not all of creatures that yet of exist are like such that were in the ruins, or in of the cave,” knowing that was when he had earned her sisters respect. “There are of others that seek to end such of dangers, and of indirectly protect us of mortals.” Another faint pause comes before Emilia adds,”Only of a few are of aware of this, thus why I asked to keep such from other of Vigilants, for I of know there are of those who would not hesitate to kill of all, making no of distinction before those that wish to of harm and those that do of not.” Before she does fall silent, allowing Lucas to digest that little bit of news.

—-

Lucas blinks at the news. “Other creatures?” he asks. “What kind?” he listens to the rest with a his face pulled into a thoughtful expression. When she is done he nods. “I can understand the sentiment on both sides to be honest,” he admits plainly. “Those who would welcome unnatural allies and those who’d damn them like the rest of their ilk. But I gather from your reaction these two are trustworthy or else you would not have kept their secrets?” he asks. So many questions from the young Wraith, but then this is a great deal to digest.

—-

“Of aye,” a nod coming as Emilia confirms that existence of other creatures. “As can of I see both of sides, or of more how such of viewpoints might be of be of had. Of admittedly, I am not of sure I would of term them all unnatural. After of all, is of a Catlord or of a warhorse unnatural simply because it is not being of human? I think to paint with so broad of a brush is not of wise, else we might of paint all those of the church like the vile of Cardinal. Or even all of humans, depending who might be of doing the judging. “ Emilia nods easily,”Of aye, I find them to be of trustworthy. And in of turn, they have found me to be of so, and thus why I am of knowing such secrets. And they of mine.”

A slight cant of her head comes as her fingers faintly trace at the air,”Unlike those of creatures within of the ruins that were once of girls and were of corrupted to become what you of fought, or even what you of fought in of the north. These are of something else, sentient and thinking like of us, not of simply beastial and of raging, acting upon such of rage and of unending hunger as of those things.”

—-

Lucas takes it all in the muscles of his brow knit above the right eye. He rubs his forehead. So much to take in. Also, where did his duty lie… he lets out a sigh. “Well then I suppose I should thank these cre-” he stops himself, and offers a slightly abashed look. “-friends of yours on behalf of my family for doing us this service. Were either of them hurt? Is there aid that can be offered?” he asks. Despite the solicitous offer, the young wraith is still appears cautious and indeed a little put upon having to choose between keeping one oath or another. “At any rate it would be interesting to meet them. If that would be allowed.”

—-

There was a small twitch at the corners of Emilia’s lips..her friends he called them…the truth was something far different, but it would not do to raise that point. “There were some of injuries taken, but nothing to of serious or needing much of tending.” More like, mostly healed already. And likely done to each other than by the Banshee Spawn. “I shall raise of the matter with of them and see if they would allow of a meeting. But I do not of know if it will be of possible to of arrange during what time remains for me or of them to be of here.” She pauses briefly,”I know this is much to be of taking of in, but do of know that Sirrah is aware of such and while she does hold some caution her of self, she does of hold of trust as of well.” There is that slight upwards tugging of the corners of her lips,”And is ever of keen in drawing of information of out from of them. If you have never of suffered at the end of one of her questionings, count yourself of lucky.” In some attempt to comfort him in the disquiet that seem to exist,”Of know, your of lands are of safer then they of were but days of ago, even if by the hands of unlikely of friends. It is better to be of knowing then of not, of aye?” After all…she could have not informed him of what transpired.

—-

Lucas pauses a moment to consider everything he’s been told, arms folded, leaning against the wall. “Fair enough,” he decides. “If the Archbishop knows about it then that is good enough for me.” He says before allowing a smile, “And since you asked, no, I’ve not been questioned by her, indeed I’ve barely talked to her, but even that was enough to tell me what I’d be in for if she did question me.” He pushes off the wall again. “So, does all of this, the things we know, get easier?” he asks lightly, already anticipating the answer no.

—-

“Of aye, she is being of aware and speaks with them, consults of with from time to of time.” Even if Emilia herself has often enough been the reason for those consultations. There is a slight nod from Emilia with a bit of a corner tug to her lips,”It is quite of true. Having been of questioned by of her, I of assure you that is for of the best. “ Emilia actually pauses at the question that comes, considering it for a few moments. “I am actually not of sure there is of a clear of answer, of perhaps some would say of no without much of thought. Or even of aye. But I am of thinking it is much like of our duties, there are of times where they are of worse and not entirely of pleasant. And yet of other times, there are of moments where they are of easier. But I do think it is never truly of easy in knowing what so many of others do not of know and cannot be of told. Even if to have of others to speak with makes it not as difficult of a burden as it might otherwise of be.”

—-

Lucas nods. “Interesting,” the young man says thoughtfully, before looking back at Emilia and smiling. “Anyhow, as promised I’ll keep your secrets, even from my family,” he adds. As if that wasn’t a given. “But if our business is done, with all the noise and nonsenses of the masque and now, some new secrets to bear, I could do with some time in the woods. If you’d care to join me, I’d welcome the company. I’ve been working on listening to the shadows.”

—-

It hadn’t been a clear cut answer, but it was as truthful an answer as Emilia could give. “Am of thanking, as of the less that are of knowing of a secret, the more it is being of kept. But I did of wish you to be aware of what passed within your of lands.” A slight nod is given,”Of aye, it is of done.” A gentle tugging occurs at the corners of her lips,”I could use of the walk of myself, and I cannot of deny being curious to your of progress. I am of pleased to know you have been of practicing.” Gently stepping to accompany him to that end.
