Pacitta City, Pacitta Tourney Grounds

The tournament grounds stand ready for use at a moment's notice. The stands are setup with the well-to-do sitting in the center, with the best seats, and for any courtiers present. A half canopy has been established to help keep the shade in the area and protect from any of the elements, a thick leather trim going across the area where the VIPs are sitting raised up about fifty feet and supported by heavy wooden poles and tethers tying it. The benches have been formed of thick wood in the gallery, with lesser galleries set to the side for commoners, guards, and those who are watching and not immediately involved over in the arena. There are roughly eight rows of seats set up for the commoners stretching off the full length of the viewing gallery, and roughly three rows thick for the VIPs to sit upon. Among the rows are those who are bringing beverage and refreshments.

The arena is dusty, a pit formed in the ground which has been dug down flat with padded dirt roughly two feet down from the main tents, the incline designed to give the crowd a better view. The center of the arena betray tell-tale markings where it is apparent that the rail for jousts could be set, if not set already. The dirt is thick and solid, packed down as firmly and evenly as it can be to ensure good footing. From the opposite ends of the exhibition pavilions are a pair of berths where the combatants would enter from and where judges and guards would otherwise sit, as well as attendants to quickly go and tend to the injured or break apart the combatants should it be necessary. The main pit is larger than the pavilions, being roughly fifty horse lengths wide, enough for all the combatants to have plenty of room to brawl without being so spread out that the main viewing area would risk losing track of them.

The crowd is thin, even for the preliminaries of the joust. The batch of competitors hasn't even been enough to fill the whole day, as it normally is. But as is customary, the most highly-regarded competitors are the last to compete for the day. There's no sign of the Chancellor, which is likely no surprise. So it's but a Circuit official that's been announcing the starts of the various rounds, and so it's with little fanfare that this next batch of competitors is given leave to begin their jousts.

Sir Raimond Giraldi waits at one end of his field, his horse pawing at the dirt a bit as he waits for the signal to begin. He gives a salute to Sir Conrad t'Artan, his opponent, a knight whom he's never faced before, and with the leave given, he lowers his lance and charges. He doesn't seem to be taking much joy in the day's proceedings, which makes for a lack of cheerful greeting, which is usually his manner at these events.

Evelyn l'Faust guides her steed towards her assigned area to tilt, finding she will be headed up against Sir Leander, a man who, at least in the form of Tourney competition, she's become well familiar with. She nods her head to him in a brief show of honor, and earnest respect before lowering her helm and prepping to ride. She turns her head briefly, to consider the others who are yet present and awaiting to ride, assessing them, as well as wondering. But such thoughts are fleeting and momentarily. She turns her focus back, squarely on Leander, nods once more and prepares to ride, once the signal is given.

Conrad t'Artan arrives on his charger, lance in hand. He gives a salute to the Rivanan knight opposite, Raimond Giraldi. Once the signal is given, he spurs his horse forward, the Ostvorian knight hoping to redeem himself from a lackluster appearance in the melee.

In the stands this time is one wispy little commoner, off toward the top and the left, away from many other (maybe out of a desire not to fall ill). She doesn't look especially bright-eyed, or bushy-tailed, but Lorelei is there regardless, hands pulled into her overlong sleeves and balled up under her chin while her elbows rest upon her knees. She looks around and waits for something exciting to happen.

"Chancellor's a no-show. color me surprised." Leander Giraldi is certainly being sarcastic as he speaks to his brother Raimond. "You'd think, given the fuss he put up to keep this tournament alive, he'd bother to at least show his face…even in that cloth box of his."

As the two ride out, Leander silences himself. He takes to his line, offering a salute to the lady knight on the opposite end. Then, grimly, the younger Giraldi awaits the signal to ride…

With little fanfare is just fine, as far as Jonathan t'Maren is concerned. Especially with the rumors flying out of home, he'd just as well let his participation in this event get as little attention as possible. Not that it will stop the rumor mill in any case, but still… Regardless, he has a task at hand to focus on, and that stops his eyes from searching the stands for more than a few moments, though doubtless they'll return. Instead, his attention is fixed on Sir Elrick, and he hefts his lance, giving a respectful nod before he prepares to charge.

It's a hard-fought round between Jonathan and his opponent, Elrick t'Tremaine, and in the end, the heir to Bloodfield finds himself worsted, taking a pair of solid though hardly crippling hits to the chest. Enough to cause him no end of frustration, though he's thankful to still be competing in the preliminaries. For a few moments his eyes go to the crowd, and perhaps to a single, thin figure sitting well away from the other fans, such as they are. But then the name of his next opponent is called, and it is… of course, his brother-in-law. Conrad. But like any other knight, he gets a respectful nod and little else as Jonathan readies himself for the next tilt.

Well…that was certainly eventful. Once again, Leander and Evelyn prove that the two of them are rather evenly matched. In this case, neither person is able to do anything significant to the other. Three passes and only glancing taps, if that. Leander himself is not happy with himself, though he does offer Eb

Three tilts. Three passes, each as the last, Evelyn able to prevent Leander from scoring against her, but every bit as unable to score a hit upon him in return. She does not look pleased with herself, in the least, but her nod to the young Giraldi suggests she at least is competent the young man has skill. So she rides to her next bout, this one against Elrick Tremaine, her friend. "It seems to me," she calls him, "We've done this dance before, my friend. One more time, then?" And while the sentiment is sincere, the usual levity in her tone is not present, given the current situation. This time, she does not look towards the other participants, she exhales, narrows her eyes and focuses. And as the signal comes, she rides.

Leander does offer Eve a smile as he rides past…to his next opponent.

Raimond Giraldi's first pass is nothing to be particularly proud of, as his lance misses his target entirely. But the next two passes, he lands one solid strike, and the next is a blow that causes his lance to splinter, though not shatter. He gives Conrad a polite smile and another salute, before moving to the next field, face-to-face with his brother, Leander. He does chuckle this time, "If Darren could see us now." He quips, giving Leander a salute, before lowering his visor and preparing for the next charge.

It was not the most eventful set of passes, but Conrad lands at least one reasonable hit, while being hit twice himself. He nods to the Giraldi and then returns with a fresh lance to see that he will be facing his sister's husband. "Ah, Sir Jonathan, best of luck to you." Conrad gives a nod and salute and awaits further instructions before charging.

Ouch. Jonathan does manage to get in a solid hit on his brother-in-law this round, which is some improvement, objectively speaking - but he's not being particularly objective when the other man's lance shatters against his helmet. He's dazed enough for Conrad to hit him again in the final tilt, though not quite dazed enough to fall off his horse. "Well… jousted," he says, through clenched teeth, not angry per se, but trying to keep it together. Especially as his next opponent is the rather formidable Raimond Giraldi. Well, then.

Perhaps fittingly, the two Giraldi Brothers score exactly the same number of points, both scoring two solid but unspectacular strikes against one another. Raimond gives his younger brother another sharp salute, speaking a just-loud-enough-for-Leander "Good Luck" as they pass and then move on to their next opponents. For Raimond, that would be the heir to Bloodfields. A man he's faced a few times now, and found a fearsome competitor. He gives the man a salute, and then when the signal is given, lowers his lance, gives his heels to his charger, and they're off for the next set of passes.

Evelyn l'Fausts next tilts are far more exciting for the crowd than the last. At first, she and Elrick trade some light hits, back and forth. The last round, however, has two harsh blows from each party, Evelyn leaning forwards as her lance shatters, taking an equal shot in return, but her skill upon her horse and her familarity with how the creature reacts helps her remain in the saddle. She looks back, making sure Elrick is okay, and she offers him, "You hit hard, Sir. As always. Best of luck to you," warmly. "Be safe." She exhales, briefly looking to the crowd, and then moving to her next tilt.

Conrad is pleased to have a decent sets of passes and then nods to Jonathan upon the completion of the passes, "You did well, yourself. Best of luck, goodbrother." Seeing he is to face his cousin next, Conrad readies his mount and rides over and nods to Evelyn, "Best of luck."

If Evelyn and Leander were of similar skill…then the two brothers are practically mirror images, at least in their tilts. Whenever one delivered a blow, the other would match. After three passes, Leander does seem none the worse for wear as he laughs. briefly. "Same to you, brother." Then…onward to his next opponent. The somewhat overprotective Sir Elrick t'Tremaine. He offers the Couvieri a nod in greeting, but no words. It isn't like Leander is his friend anyways.

Frowning behind her fists, Lorelei squints, eyes looking from rider to rider. When she finds the one she's most interested in she keeps her eyes locked on like a hawk on a mouse, watching even when lances hit and the rider flops around. Oof. She clicks her tongue in disappointment as the points rack up on the opposing side.

Another inconclusive match against another skilled foe. Raimond salutes Jonathan after they both only manage one point against each other, and adds, "Well ridden, Sir. I look forward to the brackets." And with that, he moves on to face Elrick t'Tremaine. Well, there may not be a ton of competition here at the Tourney, but let it not be said that that which is is of low skill. He salutes Elrick, and readies himself for the next charge.

Evelyn's match with Conrad is not as effective as it was with Elrick, the man she'd not faced before finding a vulnerable point to break his lance against her; luckily as with the last, the Lady Knight is able to stay atop her steed. Again, she frowns at herself but quickly smooths it over, "Well ridden," she acknowledges, admittedly as she nods to Conrad before riding past him to her next prelim match against Johnathan.

Another three passes. Leander is able to strike early…but is unable to follow up with anything more than a glancing blow. He offers a nod to Elrick as he rides by, before he takes his spot…to face off against Conrad.

A more even bout with Raimond is enough for Jonathan to shake off some of the lingering fog from his tilt with Conrad, and he's back astride his horse in no time, prepared to face another adversary from Ostvor - Evelyn l'Faust. No rest for him, not yet. With a respectful nod to the female knight, he prepares to charge.

Conrad has an acceptable set of passes and nods to eEvelyn, "As to you, cousin." He then sees that he will be facing the other Giraldi brother and sighs, "It seems that it mus be." With that, he rides out to meet his opponent in the lists and after his salute charges on command.

Another round, another 'meh' set of passes for Jonathan t'Maren. He strikes Evelyn once and is struck once in return, the two picking up points as rather more /decisive/ matches surround them. He gives her a respectful nod, a muttered, "Well jousted," and turns his horse about. Most likely he'll see her in the finals. In the meantime, the final match of the night - the other Giraldi brother. Who, despite being unhorsed moments before, remains a formidable opponent.

Evelyn manages to score a few points on Sir Jonathan, agreeing, "And to you." But she's already realized she's falling further, and further behind with others proving more skillful than she presently. Yet, there's one more round to prove herself, and garner some points back. They won't be easy, they'll be against the near cinch to win the Tournament altogether, Raimond Giraldi. "You shan't score easily off me," she tells him, in friendly enough manner. She exhales, nods, and moves to ride against the man.

One pass. That is all that Leander gets. He manages a strike to Conrad's chest…but then Conrad unleashes a massive strike, catching Leander in the neck. The blow is so strong that it causes Leander's head to whiplash and he topples from the horse, falling to the ground. A hand goes up, showing he is okay as Leander leads his horse to the side, reclaiming his seat once more. "Well struck, Sir." With a hand adjusting his gorget (just to make sure it's still there) Leander rides over for his last go around…this time with Sir t'Maren.

Sir Raimond Giraldi has his best round yet, scoring three solid strikes against Elrick t'Tremaine…and on the last, managing to topple him from his steed. Raimond pauses at the far end of the field, waiting to be assured that Elrick is all right, and once he's back on his feet, giving him a salute, and moving off to the next field, where he'll face a familiar face, and his last opponent for the preliminaries, Sir Evelyn l'Faust. He salutes, and can't help but grin just a touch, "Well met, Sir Evelyn. Let's finish this off strongly, no?" And courtesies given, he prepares himself for the final round of the night.

Conrad blinks as his first pass lands a perfect strike, but he tosses down the shattered lance and nods to Leander, "Thank you, are you all right, sir?" He frowns and raises the visor of his helm, "I wish you the best."

And…once more Leander is in the dirt. This time, it is rather apparent that Leander is not happy with himself. At all. He does pull himself to his feet, offering a polite nod to Jonathan. "It seems I am found lacking tonight. Perhaps fortune will be kinder next time we meet." Leander, then, doesn't bother with mounting his horse again. Instead, he leads his mare off to the sidelines, before he vents his displeasure on the nearest target dummy….with his helm.

The last few tilts are at least successfull for Sir Evelyn, if not as decisive as she'd like. She manages to score two points against Sir Raimond, but his efforts on the offensive don't provide for any openings much more than that. Still, she's able to evade his own strikes, or cause them to glance off her so as to not score a point. She nods her head, and removes her helm. "The finals will prove interesting," she tells him. "I expect we'll be facing each other again. I look forward to it, Sir."

It's a positive ending to the night for Jonathan, at least, though there's just a twinge of guilt that it happens at the expense of poor Leander Giraldi. "There is always another night, Sir," he addresses the man with as much grace as he can muster. "Well jousted." His own helmet is off in a hurry, and he likewise leads his charger off the field, in search of, well, whatever other business he has to attend to tonight.

Raimond's last joust of the evening is his worst of the evening. He scores no points, and Evelyn scores a couple hits of her own. He gives her a salute, and chuckles, "Well, let's hope this isn't a preview of the Brackets. Well jousted, Sir Evelyn. Until later." He does cast a concerned glance towards Leander, but is relieved to see him get up and head off…even if in a temper. Understandable, really.

And with that, the crowds begin to disperse, leaving the tourney grounds nearly abandoned in a (perhaps not so) surprisingly short time. Very little of the usual frolics and revelry accompanies this tourney. Not a surprise, but leaving plenty within the City wondering just what Mancini is thinking in insisting the tourney go on as scheduled.
