Newbie Guide

Welcome to the Newbie Guide. This is here to help players new to MUSHing connect to the game, learn some of the basic terms common to the MUSHing community and teach them some of the basic commands so they can play as well as talk to others on the game and learn more about the hobby.

Connecting to the Game

To connect to the game you’ll need a MUSH client, which is a freeware program that will allow you to connect and play the game. Here are some of the clients that we like to use and links to them :

Potato
MUSH Client
And more options can also be found on Mud Connector

Once you have the client installed you can connect to the game by entering the following: creationsedge.genesismuds.com, port 6850

Where do you enter that information?

  • In MUSHClient you can enter it under Connection -> Quick Connect. Just enter whatever you want in World Name, [addy] in TCP/IP Address and [port] in Port Number and then click OK.
  • For Potato: Click on “Address Book” then go to “New World” Fill in the World name, the address, and port, then click OK.

Lexicon of MU* Terms

IC - In Character.

OOC - Out of Character.

OIC - Speaking in character on an OOC channel.

RL - Real Life.

ICA=ICC - In Character Action Equals In Character Consequences. Basically what you do on the game has consequences for your character both good and bad.

Theme - The setting details of the game.

Canon - The original source material. In this case the game is an original theme so the canon for the game is all the background details on the site and approved character pages.

Posing - When you write up what your character is doing or saying in a scene.

Emitting - Another way to pose your character. Unlike posing it doesn't start with your
character’s name at the start (see commands below).

Paging - A means to privately communicate on game. See commands.

Channels/Chan - The out of character channels on the game.

Scene Set/Setting - The first pose of a scene that sets up the time place and other details.

Alts - Alternate characters. Basically the term for someone’s characters.

Backscene - A scene covering prior events or one that had to be paused and picked up later. In general due to ‘happening in the past’ as far as game events go they are usually closed scenes.

Closed/Open Scenes - Scenes are either open or closed depending on the person running the scene. Anyone can join open scenes (though it is good manners to let the people in the scene know you’re coming before hand) and closed scenes are limited to certain characters (ie a private chat between friends or a secret mission)

Mav/Mispose/Mispage - Mavs are communications sent on the wrong channel and/or to the wrong people. Why are they called Mavs? Apparently in the early days of MU*ing there was a character named Maverick who’s player was notorious for this and the name stuck.

Metaplot - A long overarching plot that involves all or most of the game.

TP - TinyPlot a smaller plot either staff or player run, usually consisting of a couple of scenes but isn’t as long or as far reaching as a Metaplot.

TS - TinySex. Roleplay of an overtly sexual nature. Should always be done in private.

The Grid - The rooms that make up the game world. They and the TP rooms make up the IC areas of the game.

Plot Scene - A scene with a purpose beyond just characters socializing. These scenes usually have an objective and a scene runner and may or may not include combat.
Social Scene: A scene where a number of characters are socializing.

Scenerunner/GM - GameMaster - The player who’s running a plot scene.

Basic MU* Commands

There are a lot of commands in MUSHing and while we can’t cover them all here we have put down the basic commands to get people started. For the examples ‘Bob’ will fill in for your character.

Communicating

”Say Posing - This will allow you to speak in a room. This command should only be used in OOC rooms.

Example: “Hi folks!
Output: Bob says, “Hi folks!”

OOC - This command allows you to speak while tagging your text as OOC for OOC conversations in IC areas.

Example: ooc Hi
Output: <OOC> Bob says, “Hi”

Talking on Guest Channels - This command lets you speak on the Newbie channel which is for unapproved characters. The same rule applies for +p <Public> and +g for <Guest>, as well as other channels.

Example: +n Hi
Output: <Newbie> Bob says, “Hi”

Paging - This is the command for sending a private message to someone.

Example: p Sam= Hi.
Output: You paged Sam with ‘Hi.’

You can also send to multiple people…

Example: p Sam Alex= Hello guys!
Output: You paged Sam and Alex with, ‘Hello guys!’

Scene Commands

Posing - This command allows you describe your character’s action in a scene and puts your character’s name at the start.

Example: :draws his sword, looks back at his comrades as they do the same and with a shout of “For the One!” he charges into the barbarian horde.
Output: Bob draws his sword, looks back at his comrades as they do the same and with a shout of “For the One!” he charges into the barbarian horde.

Emitting - This is like posing but instead of starting with your character’s name it starts with whatever you like. It is important to remember when using this command to use your character’s name so we know who’s emit it is.

Example: @emit The barbarians were coming and it was time to face them. Bob draws his sword, looks back at his comrades as they do the same and with a shout of “For the One!” he charges into the barbarian horde.
Output: The barbarians were coming and it was time to face them. Bob draws his sword, looks back at his comrades as they do the same and with a shout of “For the One!” he charges into the barbarian horde.

Page Break - This command is used with the other two commands to break up long poses into paragraphs. Code: %R%R

Example: @emit The barbarians were coming and it was time to face them. Bob draws his sword, looks back at his comrades as they do the same and with a shout of “For the One!” he charges into the barbarian horde. %R%RHe swings his blade felling his foe with a single stroke. He turns his horse and rides hard to the next barbarian in his sights.

Output: The barbarians were coming and it was time to face them. Bob draws his sword, looks back at his comrades as they do the same and with a shout of “For the One!” he charges into the barbarian horde.

He swings his blade felling his foe with a single stroke. He turns his horse and rides hard to the next barbarian in his sights.

Movement

These commands allow you to move through the OOC and IC areas of the game.

Looking at the Room - When you login or when you first enter a room it’s descriptions and exits are displayed. When you need to call that description again type: look or l and the description will come up.

Using Exits - To use a room exit either enter its name or the initial. For example an exit marked <O> Outside can be accessed by typing: o or outside.

Home - Typing: +home will take a player to the room that is set as their IC home and is a command that only works when set IC. In order to set a specific room to your ‘home’ type +home/set while in that room.
